An unhealthy personality emerges due to the imbalance between id and superego.
“Sigmund Freud” proposed the concept of ID, ego, and superego in the psychoanalytical theory of personality.

These elements play a significant role in our personality.

ID: It is a completely unconscious component in adults (less in Childs) which struggles to satisfy the basic needs.

Superego: It’s an ethical component that provides moral standards and principles.

Ego: It is the compromise between id and superego.

The imbalance between ID and superego causes “psychosis”. As in psychosis, the client’s sense of reality is severely distorted.

WHAT IF “ID” IS OVERLY DOMINANT?

If there is a person with overly dominant ID might be impulsive, reckless, and uncontrollable. These people are not concerned with “what is right or what is wrong”.
It may cause a personality disorder like “avoidant personality disorder”.

WHAT IF “SUPEREGO” IS OVERLY DOMINANT?

The individual with overly dominate superego might be rigid moralistically and in what they believe, they are negatively judgmental and can’t able to accept anything against rules and regulation.
Which is a result, causes anxiety, stress, and depression.

HOW WE CAN MANAGE THE IMBALANCE OF ID AND SUPEREGO?

According to Freud, a healthy personality results in the balance between the id, ego, and superego.

1. By developing a good sense of ego.
“Ego” is an executive branch of personality and a source of communication with the external world. It also plays an important role in making decisions.
The ego helps to organize thoughts and make sense of the surrounding world.

2. Self-hypnosis
It is a mindful technique that will help an individual to achieve a set goal and in strengthening the ego. It explores unconscious conflicts and desires.

3. Authoritative style of parenting.
Parenting plays a significant role in developing a healthy personality. For example, when a child born there is no ego and superego for this purpose a child totally depends on his parents. By this type of parenting, it helps the child to manage the balance between superego and id.
